My Doctor prescribed me many supplements to overcome my deteriorating health. Though it has been almost 7 years since my accident things were getting worse, so to start 2022, I decided to get my shit together and change course. I have been a disciple/convert of #Functionalmedicine since then and the life improvements have been miraculous. My question is which supplements are actually making me feel better. Since I don’t plan to stop taking some and see if it makes me feel like crap, I did some online research and made a list of the vitamins and supplements that are most recommended for #braininjury recovery. Keep in mind I am Not-A-Doctor so ask your doc before you start taking anything.
I asked the Google “what are the best supplements for TBI recovery?” Google took me to a lot of advertising which I ignored. Trusting associations, organizations and governments, I came up with the top 10 list below (top 10 because I love top 10s). I added up the number of articles that recommended each supplement and I moved the most recommended to the top of my list.

TBI 4 TG Supplements
1) Omega 3: Hands down Omega 3 fish oil supplements are the most recommended for persons recovering from TBI. Apparently, it is great for brain health in general and

supplies the brain with the building blocks it needs to repair the brain after injury. The most skeptical of smartypants organizations (Harvard) even said it might work. For everything else they said there is not enough evidence for them to take a stand. Interestingly all agreed that the best way to get Omega 3 was by eating fatty fish but that supplements would do if you are not a fish guy.
2) Whey Protein: the first thing my doctor asked me was if I got enough protein. Fortunately, I was making a protein shake with whey protein every day already. Apparently, all the various types of Amino Acids necessary to rebuild a broken brain are present in whey protein.
3) Creatine: with my protein I was taking a creatine supplement for my workouts before

I knew it was great for TBI. Creatine augments our workouts because it helps turn food into energy. This is great when you’re getting big in the weight room, but your brain also requires a ton of energy to repair itself. So now I use Creatine every day to get my brain and body big.
4) Magnesium: can be severely depleted while the body works to repair the brain. Magnesium is essential to the system over which the brain communicates instructions to the body. Magnesium deficiency can cause or amplify many of the serious symptoms associate with TBI like coordination problems, tremors, personality changes etc..
5) Vitamin B blend: cleans toxic biproducts away from neurons and protects the brain from additional damage while it heals. The benefits of the various B Vitamins for TBI are as long as my arm, I don’t mean to seem lazy but it is worth your time to take a look at this article so you can fully understand. 6) Medium chain triglycerides (MCTs): MCT is a type of fat like Omega 3 that is essential to rebuilding damaged structures in the brain.

7) Ginkgo Biloba: is an ancient/old school/Chinese , medicine that for thousands of years has been considered a cure for many things. Now science agrees it increases the blood flow to the brain and may help memory. It is in many brain improvement supplements, and witches and hippies usually have some on hand. It seems that it demonstrably alleviates problems with brain function after TBI so it is often prescribed.
8) Vitamin D: Inflammation is a key cause of damage to the brain after TBI. Vitamin D facilitates the elimination of inflammation in the brain. Like other vitamins it is often rendered quickly deficient after a TBI if it was not before and should be supplemented.
9) N-acetyl Cysteine: Essential for making the antioxidant glutathione. Please excuse my layman’s explanation but TBI causes inflammation which is associated with free radicals. N-Cysteine balances free radicals reducing inflammation and subsequently damage from TBI. It is considered an Antioxidant
10) Acetyl-L-Carnitine: turns fat into energy and may help alleviate some of the cognitive and emotional symptoms of TBI.
Conclusion: Supplements are essential to TBI recovery.
Supplements do 4 things:
· Fight inflammation,
· feed a naturally hungry and depleted brain while it repairs itself
· heal and maintain damaged connections and
· cleans up toxins and free radicals caused by damage and the repair process.
Research shows that immediately after injury, inflammation, starvation and toxification can cause additional damage to your brain which cause many of the debilitating symptoms we experience. If not addressed these conditions can continue to add damage long after the injury. The lesson is: that treatment with supplement should start immediately after injury and as my case has proven the right supplements can help you long after your brain gets smacked.
